Heavy Snowfall Transforms Kyoto’s Higashiyama into a Winter Wonderland

On February 24, 2025, Kyoto experienced a rare and heavy snowfall, astonishing both tourists and locals. This video captures the breathtaking winter scenery of Kyoto’s Higashiyama district, a renowned area filled with historical temples, shrines, and picturesque streets.

The walk begins at Sannenzaka (三年坂), one of Kyoto’s most famous traditional streets, which is covered in snow, creating a magical atmosphere. Moving on, the video showcases the iconic Yasaka Pagoda (八坂の塔), a five-story pagoda that stands beautifully against the snowy backdrop.

The journey continues to Ninenzaka (二年坂) and revisits Sannenzaka, both of which are popular walking routes leading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. These winding streets, lined with traditional wooden buildings, look even more charming under the snow.

Next, the video explores Nene no Michi (ねねの道), a quaint path named after Nene, the wife of the famous warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The video then moves to Maruyama Park (円山公園), a well-known cherry blossom viewing spot, now turned into a serene winter landscape.

Kyoto’s famous Yasaka Shrine (八坂神社) is also featured, with its striking red entrance contrasting beautifully with the falling snow. The walk concludes at Gion Ishidanshita (祇園石段下), a popular area at the entrance of Gion, known for its geisha culture and historic charm.

This rare snowy day in Kyoto brings an entirely different perspective to the ancient city, making for a captivating and peaceful viewing experience.
