The Limited Express Muroto No. 2, a distinctive train service operated by JR Shikoku, made its final journey on March 14, 2025. This video captures the last run of this unique and historically significant train, which operated between Awa-Kainan Station (阿波海南駅) and Tokushima Station (徳島駅). The Muroto service had a peculiarity in its operation—it ran as a regular train between Awa-Kainan and Mugi Station (牟岐駅) before transforming into a limited express train for the remainder of its journey to Tokushima.
The video showcases the train’s final trip, offering a nostalgic look at one of Japan's most challenging limited express routes. Rail enthusiasts regarded it as one of the most difficult limited express services to travel from end to end due to its mixed operation style and the geographical challenges of the Shikoku region. The Muroto series had been a vital part of the JR Shikoku network, connecting rural and urban areas while offering scenic views of Tokushima Prefecture’s coastline.
With its retirement, the Muroto service leaves behind memories for passengers and train lovers who appreciated its uniqueness. Shikoku’s JR network continues to evolve, but train enthusiasts will surely miss this one-of-a-kind hybrid express. This final journey marks the end of an era for one of JR Shikoku’s most interesting rail services.
