Join Chris Abroad and special guest Sharla from @sharlainjapan on a magical winter journey to Akita Prefecture, one of Japan’s snowiest and most serene destinations. This travel video showcases the ultimate cozy escape into the northern Japanese countryside, where heavy snowfall, stunning landscapes, and timeless traditions make Akita an ideal winter destination.
The journey begins at Lake Tazawa (Tazawako), the deepest lake in Japan, where Chris and Sharla experience a unique sauna experience amidst snow-covered surroundings. The Tazawako Sauna offers a juxtaposition of hot and cold—steaming heat followed by rolls in the thick snow—making it a refreshing and invigorating part of their day in the mountains.
Next, the travelers head to a beautifully preserved Edo-period townhouse in Kakunodate, known as 'Little Kyoto' of the north. At Wanoi Kakunodate, visitors can stay in traditional Japanese homes outfitted with modern comforts. Kakunodate is especially well-known for its well-maintained samurai homes, narrow streets, and cherry blossom views in spring—which are under serene snow this time of year.
The culinary highlight comes with a visit to Sakura no Sato, where they sample Inaniwa Udon. This hand-stretched noodle is one of the oldest udon varieties in Japan, famous for its silky texture and slightly chewy nature. Inaniwa Udon is a specialty of Akita and a must-try for visitors.
The adventure culminates at the magnificent Tsurunoyu Onsen, an iconic hot spring nestled deep in the Nyuto Onsen area. The rustic feel of the thatched-roof inn and milky-white mineral-rich waters, coupled with the heavy snow draping the landscape, offers viewers a glimpse into what many consider Japan's most picturesque onsen experience.
This video captures not only breathtaking visuals but profound cultural immersion and a taste of regional cuisine, perfect for any traveler looking to experience rural Japan at its wintery best.
