In this video, we take a closer look at 'Panya Yamano Gotoku,' a charming bakery nestled in Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. This cozy bakery is run by a dedicated husband-and-wife team who share a deep passion for bread-making. The owner meticulously crafts a variety of breads, using high-quality ingredients and careful fermentation techniques to ensure the perfect balance of texture and flavor.
One of the highlights of the bakery is their extensive selection of over 50 different types of bread, ranging from classic French baguettes to soft and chewy shokupan (Japanese milk bread) and traditional pretzels. Their signature offerings are so central to their identity that they are even featured in the shop’s noren (traditional fabric shop curtain) design. Another standout feature of this bakery is their unique rice flour bread, developed with a softer, mochi-like texture. Inspired by their child’s wheat allergy, these rice-based breads are a testament to their innovation and commitment to inclusivity.
The bakery also sources high-quality sweet red bean paste (anko) from a former wagashi (Japanese confectionery) shop, which they use to create their popular anpan (sweet red bean-filled bread). Despite the snowy weather on the day of shooting, loyal customers flocked to the shop from early in the morning to buy freshly baked goods, a testament to the bakery’s stellar reputation.
With its commitment to artisanal baking and a warm, welcoming atmosphere, 'Panya Yamano Gotoku' is a must-visit for anyone exploring Maebashi and looking to experience authentic Japanese bread-making at its finest.
