Scenic Drive to Nikko and Oze: World Heritage and Autumn Colors

Join Driving Japan on an incredible journey from Tokyo to the famous World Heritage site of Nikko and the pristine Oze Wetland, showcasing breathtaking autumn foliage along the way. Starting at Zojoji Temple (増上寺) in Tokyo, the drive moves through major highway junctions before reaching Nikko, a popular cultural and natural destination.

Key locations in Nikko include the historic Nikko Station, the stunning Toshogu Shrine (東照宮), the hairpin turns of Irohazaka (いろは坂), and the panoramic views from Akechidaira Plateau (明智平). Further stops include Lake Chuzenji (中禅寺湖), the Hangetsuyama Observation Deck, and the powerful Kegon Falls (華厳の滝). Visitors will also pass through Senjogahara Marshland (戦場ヶ原) and the Oku-Nikko Yumoto Onsen (奥日光湯元温泉), a renowned hot spring area.

Continuing past high-altitude roads, the drive reaches the entrance to the Oze Wetland (尾瀬). Protected from vehicular traffic, this scenic area offers over 40 km of hiking trails.

The return journey retraces the route back through Nikko and eventually back to Tokyo, concluding at Zojoji Temple. This road trip showcases some of Japan’s most scenic autumn landscapes and culturally significant sites, making it an unmissable experience for nature enthusiasts and travelers alike.
