By Driving Japan
In this stunning driving video, we embark on an unforgettable journey to Mount Fuji’s Fifth Station, capturing the breathtaking seasonal transformation of Japan’s most iconic peak.
Mount Fuji, typically remembered for its blue and white hues, turns a stunning red when bathed in the early morning sunlight during late autumn, a phenomenon known as 'Red Fuji' (赤富士). This sight is considered a symbol of good fortune. Not long after, the first snowfall covers the mountain, signaling the closure of the road leading to the Fifth Station. In 2024, the first snow came late, and the road closed on the afternoon of November 19.
The journey begins in Tokyo at The New Otani Hotel (ニューオータニ) at 4:32 AM, passing through Shibuya Entrance, Isehara Junction, and Shin-Hadano Exit, following scenic roads toward Mount Fuji. The drive provides views of beautiful landmarks like Lake Yamanakako (山中湖), Gotemba Trailhead Entrance, and the Fujinomiya Trailhead Entrance before reaching the 5th Station of Mount Fuji (富士山五合目), where frost-covered tree branches highlight the transition into winter.
Other breathtaking sights along the way include Lake Shojiko (精進湖), Lake Saiko (西湖), and Lake Kawaguchiko (河口湖), all of which offer iconic views of Mt. Fuji. The trip also passes through Shimobe Onsen Town (下部温泉), a historic hot spring destination, and Mount Fuji Children’s World (富士山こどもの国), a family-friendly park. A stop at an observation deck near Shimobe Onsen provides an expansive view of the surrounding beauty.
The return journey showcases Japan's magnificent countryside, crossing Fuji River where the Shinkansen can be seen, and continues back to Tokyo via major roads and highways. Notable points include Takaosan Entrance (高尾山), Hachioji Junction, and finally returning to The New Otani Hotel.
With Mt. Fuji’s unpredictable but mesmerizing cloud formations, every visit offers a unique experience, making this drive a once-in-a-lifetime journey through Japan’s seasonal beauty.
